Organised by Tony and Simon Lucas this year’s run started at The Toby Inn at Oulton, nr Wakefield. Breakfast was available for those that required it or just a coffee and a wander round the cars the choice was there. Simon Lucas aided by Sheila Crosby distributed the route instructions and also the lunch tickets for those who had pre-ordered as was requested as places for lunch were limited. But who was missing? Yes poor old Tony Lucas. Unfortunately Tony had recently suffered a heart attack and for those who had not heard, had been hospitalised but had had a successful operation and was making a good recovery and was in good spirits and everyone on the run sent him very their best wishes.
At approximately 10.30am cars began leaving the car park armed with their instructions for quite a comprehensive route passing through Tadcaster and through the villages of Askham Richard, and Rufforth before by-passing York etc. A comfort stop at Poppletons Garden Centre where people had time for a wander around or to make use of the facilities offered. Unfortunately Mike and Lesley Nixon had a problem with their lovely MGA which refused to start and go any further. Simon Lucas stopped to assist but the problem seemed insurmountable and the AA were called and had to take Mike and Lesley home on a transporter.
Sheila and Roland arrived early at the lunch destination which was The Lion Inn at Blakey Ridge, the other side of Hutton-le-Hole, to liase with the Manager and to sort out the car parking. In the event this was quite a task as although this Inn is remote it is also very popular for their Sunday Lunches. The car park was almost full to the brim, as was the pub inside, but Roland with his yellow jacket managed to find a space for everyone, with some blocking in others on the run who were staying for the lunch.
Although the bar was absolutely full the atmosphere was jovial, especially after thirsts were quenched, with everyone saying how much they had enjoyed the run. At 2.30pm we were called through to our room where a superb choice of Sunday roasts were offered and enjoyed. After dinner the Chairman of Leeds MG and Classic Car Club stood up and gave a vote of thanks to Tony and Simon for an excellent run, to Sheila and Roland Crosby for filling in where needed and to the staff at The Lion Inn for an excellent meal, and to all the clubs for supporting the event and closed wishing everybody a safe journey home.
PS. Poor Simon missed out on a superb lunch as he stayed with the breakdown at Poppleton Garden Centre and our thanks go out to him for helping Mike and Lesley, it was very much appreciated.
