DRIVE IT DAY – Sunday April 22nd 2018
The weather was far better than had been forecast when 23 cars met up at The Langlands Garden Centre on the A64 for coffee and bacon sandwiches and to take part on the “Drive it Day” run organised by Dave Fletcher and Dennis Hodge.
Suitably refreshed and with instructions at the ready cars departed on a very pleasant 50 mile trip going through the villages of Scholes, and Barwick-in-Elmet and onto Aberford passing the picturesque Alms Houses on the Right. These were built in 1844 in memory of Richard Gascoigne, a local dignitary and land owner. From Aberford we carried on through the countryside and some new roads and territory for the club, namely Birkin, West Haddlesey, Chapel Haddlesey and on into Selby before passing in front of the splendid Selby Abbey. The Abbey itself is noted for its inspiring architecture and has served the community of Selby for over 900 years.
From Selby we continued largely on main roads before ending our run at Elvington Air Museum. Many of us enjoyed lunch in the NAAFI, while others had taken picnics. After lunch we all enjoyed the large range of exhibits and collections. There were over 60 historic aircraft and vehicles spanning almost the entire history of flight.
Thanks to Dave and Dennis for a splendid run and allowing the weather to stay fine for our journey home.
