A superb turn out from club members on this 2019 Drive-it-Day Run when classic car owners are encouraged to take to the road to help create awareness of our hobby. Starting at the ever popular Stephen Smith’s Garden Centre for coffee, bacon sandwiches etc saw 26 cars and their crews leaving at approximately 11.00am going through the town of Otley and climbing steeply towards the Chevin before turning onto York Gate and passing The Chevin Country Park Hotel and The Royalty to continue for a few miles before crossing the A65 and onwards towards Bingley and out into the open countryside.
A Left turn at Dick Hudson’s pub and deep into Bronte Country crossing The Leeds Liverpool canal at Kildwick crossing, flirting with the Lancashire border. Through Silsden via Brown Bank Lane and then a sharp Right onto A6034, a Left turn onto Cringles Lane and onto Dennis Lane and eventually arriving at The White Lion pub near Farnhill, Slight confusion arose when the mathematics at the next instruction did not quite match up but most got it right and carried on this very interesting and enjoyable route.
We didn’t see a huge number of classic cars out enjoying their own Drive it Day events but there were some real standouts. An excellent Morris Minor Traveller, a magnificent Bullnose Morris and a handsome Jaguar E-Type to name but a few, cheery waves were exchanged. Onto the A6068 and a Right turn just after The Dog & Gun saw us passing through some lovely villages and excellent views.
By now we were into the latter half of the route and passing Wycoller Country Park and The Emmott Arms on the Left saw us crossing the reservoir road and heading for our final destination, Oxenhope Railway Station and the station car park. Picnic facilities and a Buffet Carriage and Restaurant Carriage were available to those who wished to partake whilst awaiting the next steam train, and they were not disappointed as the train with almost full carriages pulled in with excited children waving Thomas the Tank Engine flags, but a lot of us ended up in The Dog & Gun for Sunday Lunch which was superb.
All in all it was a lovely day out, an excellent run, good weather and good company. Who could ask for anything more.
Thank you Dave & Dennis
