16 cars arrived at Mackenzies Smokehouse, Blubberhouses on a sunny and clear morning for the car run to the Black Sheep Brewery at Masham. Tea, coffee, biscuits and a room were very kindly provided by Mackenzies which was greatly appreciated by all.
We departed at about 11.30am on a run organised by Charles and Dennis. After turning right out of the car park we headed for the Stonehouse Inn where we turned right and travelled towards Braithwaite through superb countryside with excellent views. The run took us just south of Fountains Abbey and then towards Aldfield turning left by the very pretty St Lawrence church. After travelling through more picturesque scenery and little hamlets located around Winkersley we entered the village of Kirby Malzeard. From there we travelled towards Ilton and Swinton on a very challenging single track road which tested all cars suspension and ground clearance!
After more open countryside with extensive views we found ourselves turning left by the imposing entrance to Swinton Park Hotel. At the cross roads in Warren Gill we saw the first sign to Leeds Pals Memorial. The route plan gave the option of visiting the memorial or continuing on to Masham. After travelling through more open countryside dotted with small villages and hamlets we finished the run in the Black Sheep Brewery car park. In all 28 people stayed and enjoyed Sunday lunch. Several members visited the memorial following the meal and paid their respects to the Leeds Pals. Thanks very much to Charles and Dennis for organising another excellent run.
