After meeting at Ainsty’s farm shop at Green Hammerton on the A59, 14 cars left to take part in the Summer Flowers Run organised by Gwen and Derek Taylor. The title of the run turned out to be a very apt title. We drove through many well kept villages west of York.
After 9 miles we passed Spofforth Castle, built in the 14th Century, to fortify the original manor house. Reputedly, it was here that rebel barons drew up the Magna Carta in 1215.
From Spofforth we continued on to Wetherby, via Kirby Overblow and Sicklinghall. The run then saw us passing through Clifford and Bramham before crossing over the recently restored Tadcaster bridge.
Leaving Tadcaster behind we progressed on to Appleton Roebuck where the scarecrow festival was in full swing. We slowed down here to be able to admire the imaginative exhibits these included:-Tinkerbelle and Peter Pan, Gruffalo and Mouse, Postman Pat and Jess, Little Pigs and The Wolf to name but a few.
On we drove passing through Copmanthorpe and Colton before arriving at our dinner stop and final destination at Bilborough services on the A64, Scott’s fish and chip restaurant. The very varied menu catered for everyone’s taste buds. The weather was kind to us, top down all the way.
Thank you Gwen and Derek for another scenic club run.
